What do I wear to a family photoshoot?

Coordinating the whole family for a photo shoot can be a daunting task. Someone doesn’t want to have their photo taken, someone has other commitments to work around, and if you’ve got a toddler, ensuring they’re cooperative is a whole new challenge altogether.

Once these issues have been addressed, you might think you’re ready to go. But wait, what is everyone going to wear?

Take a deep breath - it’s not as stressful as you might think! That’s why I’ve put together this guide to help make decision-making easier for you and your family come photo day.

1. STYLE

A general rule: Parents neutral / Kids in brighter colours

Spring/Summer: Dresses or skirts, jeans or khakis

Autumn/Winter: Tights, cool coats, darker pants or jeans

There’s some great colour combinations available as long as you follow this simple rule: Don’t wear something you are super uncomfortable in. It’s important that you enjoy your shoot. However, worrying about your size and going for an outfit that’s overly loose and catches in the wind can make you look bigger than you are! So don’t be afraid to wear something loosely fitting for comfort, but make sure it is fitting enough to keep your shape.

2. COLOURS

Spring/Summer: Cool colours – keep the tones relevant to summer and incorporate earthy tones such as browns, creams, whites and blues.

Autumn/ Winter: Warm colours  - in winter the light is more contrasting so you can opt for colours that pop!

What not to wear: Unless you really love it, I recommend that the family doesn’t all wear the same colour – e.g. all white shirts with all denim jeans. If this is something you do have in mind, I’d instead suggest modernising it by mixing up the tones. Try boys in navy tops and girls in white tops or kids in light denim.

What to avoid: Shirts with brand names or designs that will date. You may love that design now, but think about whether you will still love it in five year’s time. Also avoid wearing anything with crazy patterns. They can be overwhelming on camera.

3. ACCESSORIES

It isn’t necessary to go over the top with accessories, stick with your simply everyday items, like a watch or wedding rings. Or if you do want to have a bit of fun with accessories, try scarves or hats.

4. WHAT TO BRING

Something special. This might be a blanket or your child’s favourite toy. Even consider bringing props that relate to your family, like a board game. It can be fun to create a scene that represents your family or a family tradition.

5. DON’T FORGET

The main thing is that you have fun at the shoot and create special memories! The most beautiful photographs are the real ones when we can capture a genuinely happy moment for your family. We don’t want any photos with forced smiles. Relax and enjoy yourself.
